AIM: At the end of the training course, the candidate should be able to perform independently in the field of Emergency Medicine the evaluation, investigation, procedures, treatment and disposition & referral of emergency medical cases and including life support training.
OBJECTIVE : To achieve the above aim, following objectives must be fulfilled:
A.Cognitive Domain. The candidate should have a sound knowledge of:
1. Proper history and examination in emergency setting;
2. Emergency investigations with interpretation with reasonable accuracy;
3. Reasonable working diagnosis, course and complications of common
5. Emergency procedures and life support measures;
6. Emergency treatment, monitoring and disposition of emergency cases;
7. Emergency drugs, toxicities and drug-delivery systems;
8. Emergency equipment- usage and maintenance;
9. Computers for information , data entry, analyses and research.
10. Administrative set-up of Emergency services including Disaster Management Plan (DMP).
B.Psychomotor Domain. The candidate should be able to carry out:

5. Usage and maintainance of equipment;
6. Retrieval of information, data entry and analyses in computers.

INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND: There is no formal structured training in the field of Emergency Medicine in India, though in the western countries, Emergency Medicine is a well recognized speciality with separate Residency Programme. Recently, a well planned Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has been started at K.E.M.Hospital to cater to a work load of about 250-300 emergency referrals daily. This includes patients of Infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Neurological disorders, Drug toxicities and poisonings. Occasionally, mass-casualties e.g. Food poisoning, ethanol toxicity are seen. The 5 bedded Acute Care Unit (ACU) has almost 100% occupancy and a variety of patients are treated here viz. Acute Myocardial Infarction, Stroke, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Acute flaccid paralysis, patients with respiratory failure , heart failure etc.
The EMS is supported by Emergency Laboratory, ECG, X-Ray and Sonography facilities. This comprehensive service and a wide spectrum of medical emergencies attended give a good opportunity for learning and training in the field of Emergency Medicine. Our Institution has taken the step of providing this training not only to doctors of the country, but also to foreign medical graduates.

TRAINING PROGRAMME & POSTINGS:
|1. EMS Postings :||Candidates will be posted in the EMS on a rotation basis, round the clock for an 8 hours’ shift daily. Appropriate offs will be given according to the timetable.|

PERIOD OF TRAINING: Three months
APPLICATION & SELECTION:
Candidates will be required to submit the following:
1. An application form on plain paper addressed to Head of Medicine ( at least one week in advance to the date of commencing the course).
2. Certified copy of MBBS Degree.
3. Certified copy of Internship completion.
4. Certified copy of MBBS/ MD Registration from the Maharashtra Medical Council.
On approval of the application, a prescribed fee of Rs.6000.00 (six thousand only) is payable to the Institution once the candidate is selected for the course. The cheque/ D.D. should be drawn in favour of ” Seth GSMC & KEMH Department Development Fund” and should be payable in Mumbai. Fees once paid is non-refundable and non-transferable.
BOARDING & LODGING :
No Boarding & Lodging facility will be provided to the candidates by the institution. The candidates are expected to arrange the same on their own.
NO stipend is payable during the course.
A log book for day to day record of activities will be maintained by the candidate and countersigned by the EMS faculty.
An assessment at the end of the course will be made by : a. scrutinizing the Log-book; b. General observation & remarks by the course director.
A Certificate will be awarded at the end of successful completion of the course by the Institution.
